The Child With Special Needs: Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth, by Drs. Stanley Greenspan and Serena Wieder

Comprehensive but not a fast read. Primary focus is on improving a child’s intellectual and emotional growth through floortime (see Therapeutic Strategies). Explains stages of child development in typically developing children and how it differs with children with special needs. Covers all kinds of disabilities — including cerebral palsy, autism, retardation, ADD and language problems.

More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, by Fern Sussman

Easy to read, comprehensive how-to guidebook written for parents of preschool children. Filled with practical ideas and shows parents how to seize the moment and promote meaningful interactions and communication skills. Codes stages of communication to help parents identify the communication skills in their child.

Learning Language and Loving It – The Hanen Program for Early Childhood Educators, by Elaine Weitzman and Janice Greenberg

Illustrated guidebook shows how to promote children’s social, language and literacy development in early childhood settings. Aimed at teachers, speech and language pathologists and other professionals who work with young children in early childhood settings. Written in plain English.

Learning Language and Loving – The Teaching Tape (Hanen Program)

Thinking Goes to School: Piaget's Theory in Practice with Additional Thoughts, by Hans G. Furth and Harry Wachs

Shows how children can be prepared to develop their full potential as “thinking” human beings. Explains benefit of vision therapy. Extensive chapter describes activities or “thinking games” — visual, auditory, graphic, hand logical and social thinking — to help children deal successfully with specific academic subjects.
